Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed - else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die. ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower
Everybody loves freedom. Everybody wants freedom. But, what is freedom? Freedom is limited as it rightly should be. Consider the freedom for someone to break and enter into your home to steal everything you own. Consider the freedom for someone to shoot heroin into their veins. Consider the freedom for someone to speed recklessly through you neighborhood. Consider the freedom for someone to commit murder under the guise of an aborted choice. Some may think that they are totally free, but they are blinded by Satan and are led around by his will.
Jesus spoke of spiritual liberty. He spoke of their bondage to sin. He spoke of their captivity to Satan. In verse 34, Jesus states who ever commits sin is the servant of sin. We all have sinned (Romans 3:23) and the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Therefore, we all are in bondage to sin and are destined for death, both spiritual and physical. Satan leads us around, deceiving us like he did Eve in the garden of Eden. He constantly shoots fiery darts of doubt, fear, anger, insecurity, guilt, and blasphemous thoughts into our minds and souls. But, Jesus spoke of liberty. Freedom. Truth.
Jesus encouraged them to listen to His teaching, rely on His promises, and obey His commands then they would be disciples where they would learn where their hope and strength lay. You, too, can be encouraged to do the same. Study the Word, pray on it, follow it. Daily, like President Eisenhower said in the quote above. Study the Word daily, pray daily, obey daily. Make it fresh daily. When you find a promise in the Bible, claim it. When you come to a command, obey it. When you read of a truth, believe it.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. - John 14:6
